Everybody is talking about Creating High Impact Nonprofits, a research-based article by Heather McLeod Grant and Leslie R. Crutchfield published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review (Fall 2007) and soon to be a major motion picture (well, no, just a book). The authors outline six “high road” practices of highly effective nonprofit organizations. I say high road, because the practices all have an element of selflessness—sharing power and tools freely, creating supportive networks, advocacy that transcends the interests of an individual organization. In other words, these organizations take an “open source” approach to knowledge and leadership in the interests of building a larger movement.
