Finding a nonprofit job in Seattle
Each year, I meet countless people who ask me for an “informational interview.” They fall into several categories: general nonprofit sector job seekers, consultant “wannabes” and aspiring interim executive directors. It is flattering, time-consuming and ultimately rewarding to meet these folks, and I have several wonderful friendships that began in this way. Since I do not aspire to provide free career counseling on a full-time basis, I thought I would share some general advice about job searching and career changing here. For job seekers, my advice to you is as follows:· Look for jobs on idealist.org, Craig’s List, and nonprofitnetworking@yahoogroups.com.· Volunteer in the community, choosing strategically in alignment with your passions and with a well-regarded organization. This will allow you to demonstrate what you can do, gain local, relevant experience, and expand your circle of references.· Especially if you have limited nonprofit experience, consider a relevant academic program such as UW Extension’s Nonprofit Management Certificate, or a Masters degree from UW or SU. · Serve on a board of directors, especially if you want a senior management position. In order to work well with a board, you need to “walk a mile in their shoes.”· Keep networking!!· Seek a challenging position, and consider applying for Executive Director jobs if people tell you that you have the qualifications. We need good leadership in our sector, and not everyone can be a Program Director or Associate Director.· Learn to fundraise—all nonprofit employees need to advocate for resources to support their work Consultants and aspiring IEDs, stay tuned for future posts.
